Introduction

With Street Fighter and Mega Man out of the way, we come to the last 90's Capcom cartoon: Darkstalkers. The first Darkstalkers game (known as Vampire in Japan) was released in 1994 and was fairly popular as it took a new take on the beat 'em up genre with monster characters and things like chain combos making the game quite different from Capcom's other primary fighting series, Street Fighter II.

One year later the sequel to Darkstalkers, Night Warriors, was released (a.k.a Vampire Hunter in Japan) and this is where the idea was put forward to make a cartoon about the series, which got the go ahead. The Darkstalkers cartoon first aired in 1995 and featured all the characters from Night Warriors game along with several entirely new characters. The show consists of an evil being known as Pyron recruiting several Darkstalkers (which are basically monsters and other creatures) to help him try and take over the Earth whilst a team of good Darkstalkers try and stop him, helped out by a human kid called Harry.

The cartoon couldn't have come at a more worse time though. The Night Warriors arcade game was not popular and marked a decline in the popularity of the series as a whole. This was made worse by the fact that the Night Warriors arcade game wasn't even released in Europe. So the cartoon didn't get many viewers because it was based on a game series not many had head of. But the main reason this cartoon is disliked so much is how many see it as an awful cartoon. Characters in it look little like their video game counterparts, no-one liked Harry, the story lines for episodes were often stupid, the animation was very poor, etc. And because of this it is seen as one of the worst video game based cartoons ever created.

But of course, I love it. It's got exploding robot dinosaurs, Anakaris doing crazy things, amusing dialogue and is generally a lot of fun to watch and a good old laugh. And in terms of humour, Darkstalkers rules, so buy, buy, buy. Bye!
