Parachuting in, you must take on Morden's defending soldiers.
Attacking you with either grenades or knifes (when close) these
basic grunts are the least of your worries though as you
eventually face up against a large bomb dropping helicopter which
takes multiple hits before crashing. Advance onward into a small
enemy base full of wooden huts.
Destroy the huts and find the Metal Slug. Use it to destroy
another enemy helicopter and make it crash into the largest hut,
clearing a route for you. Advance onwards and destroy a barrel to
blow up another big hut, clearing another route.
Continue onward and travel up the hill. Two or three enemy tanks
will appear and fire off shells at you, but are easy to outwit.
At the top of the hill the boss, The Bomber. The Bomber attacks
you by launching blue bombs at you, so keep moving back and forth
to avoid these shots. It's other major attack is a blue laser
which it can fire at two different heights, so duck or jump
depending on where the laser starts to charge. The other thing
this boss does is deploy soldiers, who will often drop weapons
when killed, so bear this in mind if you lose the slug.
Landing on at a train station, kill the soldiers having a camp
fire and shoot the flags and clock for bonus points. Approach the
electric gates with caution -either duck under them or jump them.
When enemy troops start parachuting in above you, use the flame
thrower to burn them all quickly.
Walk up the path and be careful as you cross the bridge -enemies
lurk under the surface and blow parts of it away. Halfway across
a tank will challenge you, but as long as you picked up a rocket
launcher near it you'll destroy it in no time at all. Keep going
and boats will appear beneath you, complete with grenade throwing
soldiers. Aim down and blast away to destroy all the boats (3 of
them in total). After the third one starts to blow up, collect
the shotgun it leaves behind, then destroy it for good.
Make enemies fly away hilariously with a shotgun blast. Another
tank appears here, so be ready to duck and shoot to take it out
with a couple of shots, if you have the shot gun that is. The sub
boss, the Rail Tank, appears in the next section and is fairly
easy to kill. It fire slow travelling blue bombs at you, so just
fire away with the shotgun to have it destroyed in no time.
After obliterating the Rail Tank head onward and you'll find
another Metal Slug. Use it in the next section to kill
approaching troops and shoot down planes. After this section you'll
be able to get some more shells for the slugs cannon and a gas
power up should you need it. Then it's time to face the second
boss - a jumbo jet with General Morden inside. The jet has
various attacks, including a missile launcher and the ability to
send out a load of mines. Morden himself will sometimes appear to
shoot rockets at you. There are several platforms which rise
which you can use to get higher and give you more chance of
hitting the boss with the slug's cannon. When you destroy the
boss, Morden escapes luckily by grabbing into a plane.
Start by working your way upward. Be sure to rescue the first
prisoner you see to receive a heavy machine gun. At a certain
point you won't be able to go up any higher, and enemy soldiers
will parachute in totting bazookas, in sets of either twos or
threes. Use the heavy machine gun to take them all out without
much trouble. After these guys are all killed, a helicopter will
appear and start to drop bombs everywhere, but as long as you
haven't wasted the ammo on the heavy machine gun it's easy to
take out.
After the helicopter is destroyed, an elevator will come down so
jump onto it and let it carry you upward. Keep going up and you'll
eventually come to this structure which is actually a kind of
puzzle -something that doesn't come up much in Metal Slug games.
You need to shoot the button with the up arrow on it to get the
gate to rise, so you can shoot at the barrel. It's not that easy
though as soldiers keep appearing firing at you. This is much
easier to do in the 2 player mode than it is in the single player
-just have player 1 shooting the button and player 2 shooting at
the barrel.
Enough shots will destroy the structure allowing you to pass. The
next section contains a lot of platforms so time your jumps
carefully. After this you'll have to avoid soldiers who roll
large snowballs around, then jump up to the sub boss area. Allen
O'Neil is much more than a normal soldier, as he can take lots of
hits and can attack you quickly. As well as shooting off bursts
of machine gun fire at you he can also throw bombs around, and if
he gets close to you he will slice you with a knife. Move around
constantly to avoid his attacks and use bombs whenever possible.
When he dies, his cry of "See you in hell" may make you
think you won't be seeing him again, but you probably know that
he'll be back.
With Allen out the way continue right to see a new type of enemy
tank which fires arcing shots at you, and are fairly easy to
avoid. You can pick up a rocket launcher here so this tank can be
disposed of fairly easily. Continue onward and you can rescue a
few prisoners and destroy a few crates for carious weapons,
including a very handy shotgun. Use it against a trio of tanks
which appear, then go right to see another one of those red
barrels. Ignore all the enemies in this area and just keep
shooting the barrel. When it explodes, some hapless enemy soldier
will catch fire and run straight into the ammunition warehouse,
and...
...everything in it explodes, totally levelling it, complete with
hilarious soldiers being thrown at the screen. When you regain
control of your character, go onward to see a metal slug, which
you should certainly use for the rest of this level. There is a
onslaught of tanks in the next section, and due to there being
two different level heights they can appear all over the place so
be ready to use the vulcan cannon a lot.
Even more tanks arrive to take you on, complete with bomb tossing
soldiers. Destroy them and continue to arrive to the final enemy
of the level -the boss tank. This tank has 2 mine launchers and
one large laser cannon. The main cannon doesn't fire much but it
will constantly fire off mines at you. Thankfully, you can often
deflect these by shooting them as they launch. Sometimes, instead
of firing mines, boss tank will use mini guns instead. The mine
launchers/mini guns can actually be destroyed, but if you do this
the laser cannon will fire more often.
As soon as the level starts, quickly go right and shoot to take
out firework throwing soldiers. If you wait, more of them appear
and it can be a real pain taking them all out. When you see a red
barrel, don't shoot it yet - instead, use it as a platform to
reach the metal slug and prisoner above. Use the slug in the next
section to easily wipe out the small force of enemy soldiers in
record time.
Out into the open you'll have to deal with enemy tanks which are
all over the place. You can shoot out cliff edges to make the
tanks above fall down. Another new type of tank appears which
shoots missiles and has spikes on the front. If you have the slug
still one cannon shot will total these, but if you haven't, throw
a bomb so that it lands on the tank operator to blow the tank up
easily. You'll eventually come up to new enemy turrets which fire
missiles at you, but can be destroyed quickly.
The entire next section before the boss is full of these gun
turrets, so use the slug's cannon a lot (if you still have the
slug that is) to destroy them. There are plenty of prisoners you
can rescue here, so you should be able to get a lot of heavy
machine gun ammo. After the turrets you'll come to a cave which
contains the boss -Super tanks. These two large tanks will move
left or right and fire off twin shots, so duck to avoid these.
They also have missile launchers on the back, but these missiles
are slow and are unlikely to cause any trouble. I believe that if
you destroy the bottom tank first, the other tank is easier to
destroy. Both of these tanks are fairly weak though, making them
the easiest bosses of the game as long as you have a fast finger
on the trigger.
This is a fun (if very short) mission simply because you can
destroy everything. At the start, constantly shoot at the
buildings to destroy them, as they often are concealing items or
prisoners. Grab the flame shot weapon to fry enemies and then
jump into the metal slug. The slug can crush cars easily simply
be moving it over them. Several soldiers will rush at you with
shields and swords, but as long as you still have the slug you
can run them all over.
After the car crushing several enemy planes will fly and attack
with missiles. Jump around to avoid these missiles and keep going
right. You'll arrive at a gate which is protected by a missile
launcher, a helicopter and enemy troops who arrive in a troop
carrier. Try and take out the helicopter first as this is the
biggest threat to you. Then destroy the gate to continue on - only
for you to arrive to another gate. This one is protected by one
of those super tanks you fought in the previous mission - try and
ignore it and instead concentrate on destroying the gate to make
a get away.
When you see a load of missiles fly past you know that the boss
is near. The Armoured carrier is a large assault vehicle with
missiles, a flame thrower and grenades. It can also make itself
rise upward on stands, Thunderbird 2 style, which reveals the
flame thrower. If you want to rescue 3 extra prisoners, destroy
the flame thrower to release them. The grenades this boss fires
are fairly easy to avoid as long as you have quick reactions, and
the missiles it fires can be destroyed.
The final attack - it's almost ever. But being the last level and
all, it's the longest and toughest mission you'll do in the game.
Hundreds on Morden troops become basic cannon fodder, but don't
let them crowd around you. At the start of the mission go right
and you'll see one of those tanks with the arc shots. Crouch and
shoot at the sandbags so you can get clear shots at the tank.
Keep going right after the tank is destroyed and lots of basic
troops will appear, either shoot them all or just storm past them.
You'll eventually get to a bridge which has many tanks and
soldiers, so be careful when moving.
Continue to fight across the bridge. More enemy tanks will appear,
joined by a new type of enemy - motorbikes with side cars. The
side cars contain enemies with missile launchers which will
slowly home in on you, but they can be destroyed. After you clear
these, Morden will appear and destroy the bridge entirely,
sending you downward.
You'll fall down and land on a submarine, complete with a fully
usable gun turret. As soon as you land, several enemy planes will
attack and drop bombs, as well as some enemy troops who parachute
down. Use the turret carefully to take these enemies out.
Eventually you'll get to a structure which needs to be destroyed
to progress. However, before you destroy the red barrel, use it
as a platform to reach a Metal Slug - the extra fire power it has
comes in very useful for the rest of this level. When you get in
the slug, put it back on the submarine and then destroy the
barrel so you can progress.
After this, more planes appear, dropping missiles. After a small
fleet of these you'll arrive at another structure, aim for the
barrel and destroy it as quickly as possible to wipe out all the
enemies on the structure in one strike. After this the submarine
will finally hit land, allowing you to progress on. Watch out for
a few missile chucking divers as you leave the sub.
The only big problems in the next section are another one of
those helicopters which rapidly drops bombs in sets of 3, plus
there are lots of enemy soldiers which jump at you and try to
stab you. Continue on to the final boss -Morden himself in his "Huey
Twin" helicopter. Morden himself attacks with a bazooka,
whilst the helicopter itself fires off missiles and uses a chain
gun to fire at you. Go upward and throw any bombs you have left
at him, and keep moving around as much as possible to avoid
attacks. If you see the helicopter rise to the top right corner of
the screen, be ready to shoot upward as the helicopter will do a
fly-by and drop lots of bombs, which have to be destroyed to be
avoided.
With the game beaten you get the score screen. Since I'm godlike
and never use save states to my advantage I completed the game
with no continues. Hell, I didn't even lose a life, I'm that good.
Really. I don't think you'll be able to do that well. Gurgle.
