Deszaras is the new leader of the Decepticons in Transformers Victory, the third and final Japanese exclusive series set in the Generation 1 continuity which was released in 1989. And he is easily the best new character of the series and the most evil Transformer ever seen yet.

It's never revealed in the anime exactly how Deszaras became the Emperor of Destruction, but his toy's tech specs tell us that he simply obtained the title of leadership from Overlord. And with that done and dusted, he wastes no time in carrying out his plan to re-activate his space fortress which was sealed away into the dark nebula by Star Saber. This is his main plan for the whole of the series: he and his troops set out to the Earth to steal as much energy as possible so they can use it to free the fortress.

From the moment he first appears, you can just tell that Deszaras is one bad robot. His design screams "evil" and it just makes a pleasant change from your usual Decepticon leader, as he doesn't have a cannon on his arm or have a transforming head. He's one big, bad-ass and pissed off Decepticon leader with a great name and one of the most sinister laughs ever heard anywhere, not just in Transformers.

And that leads on to the main reason I think Deszaras is so awesome: his voice. It's just so different to anything heard before and was supplied by Takeshi Aono, who has surprisingly only ever voiced this one Transformer, despite doing voice work for quite a lot of other stuff. And like I said, he has the most fear-inducing laugh ever. Megatron, Galvatron and co. haven't got anything on Deszaras.

He also has a quite strange transformation for a Decepticon leader. Instead of turning into a gun or cannon of something like that, he can transform into a "bird monster" which is the beastly thing to the left of this text and it does look the business, although Deszaras seems to prefer to stay in his robot mode most of the time (I'm not complaining). As part of the Brestforce, he is also unique in the fact that he is the only one to have two Brest animals, rather than one like anyone else.

Another great thing about him is that because he was used in a Japanese series, he actually gets to win and achieve things from time to time, which Megatron never did. This includes laying the smackdown on Star Saber on more than one occasion and probably most famously being the one to wound God Ginrai so badly, he died.

Deszaras' personality is that he just wants results and whilst he often beats down on his own guys, they deserve it, especially Leozack. Deszaras lets the other Decepticons under his command know who is really in charge and is stops Leozack from ever trying to overthrow him (in the anime, at least)

The final mention has to go to the weapons he uses in the series. When he first appears he often uses a mace (which the toy kind of featured but only as an attachment to his gun, and not a separate weapon) and he was also given a gigantic scimitar (which the toy didn't come with) just so he could compete with Star Saber's saber blade. But his most memorable weapon was his "living-metal destroying cannon", a huge rifle operated by Deszaras' own energy which could erode the metal of other Transformers.
